Festival Sunday: Cankar, Anhovo and U!-BU?
The seventh festival day brings three productions that, through different theatrical languages, open up questions of class, responsibility, the environment, and social blindness.
At 6 p.m., the Fran Žižek Hall will host And Many Others …, a co-production by the Prešeren Theatre Kranj and the Slovenian People’s Theatre Celje. Based on motifs from Ivan Cankar and adapted by Varja Hrvatin and Bor Ravbar, the production explores poverty, class position, and social shame. By placing Cankar’s texts in a contemporary context, it asks how economic inequality shapes family and interpersonal relationships. The performance will be followed by a discussion with the creative team.
The Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica will present Anhovo on the stage tribune of the Ondina Otta Klasinc Hall. This original project by Žiga Divjak and Katarina Morano draws on testimonies from the people of Anhovo and the Soča Valley. The production addresses asbestos, pollution, and the dominance of capital over human health. At the same time, Anhovo is also a story of courage, perseverance, solidarity, and resistance. A limited number of tickets are still available.
At the Maribor Puppet Theatre, audiences can also see U!-BU?, directed by Matija Solce and inspired by Alfred Jarry. Situated at the intersection of political theatre, object theatre, grotesque performance, and concert, the production creates an eccentric world of UBU-ism. Through puppets, music, Dadaist humour, and sharp social critique, it confronts us with images of power, greed, and the absurdities of the contemporary world.
