Friedrich Luft Prize for Three Sisters directed by Mateja Koležnik

The production of Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov, directed by Mateja Koležnik and produced by the Berliner Ensemble, has been awarded the 2026 Friedrich Luft Prize. The jury selected it as the best production of the 2025/26 season on the stages of Berlin and Potsdam.

The Slovenian director moved the action from a bright salon into a claustrophobic barracks. The jury particularly highlighted the connection between the bourgeois decadence of Chekhov’s characters and the fear of an escalating war in Europe’s neighbourhood.

The prize, named after theatre critic Friedrich Luft, is awarded by Berliner Morgenpost and Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
