Guest Performances of Croatian Theatres at the 61st Borštnik Festival

by 4. maj 2026

The 61st edition of the Maribor Theatre Festival, taking place this June in Maribor, will also host two acclaimed productions from Croatian theatres. Each, in its own way, opens up questions of contemporary identity, time, memory, theatrical language, and human experience. The festival programme will feature Max, Mischa and the Tet Offensive, performed by the Zagreb Youth Theatre, and the original project Truthiness(Zares), performed by the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.

The first, a monumental stage adaptation of the novel by Norwegian writer Johan Harstad, directed by Ivica Buljan, is an expansive narrative about coming of age, migration, loss, war, art, and time—constantly pushing the individual between past and future.

The second, a more intimate and conceptually refined work by Tomislav Šoban, stems from the idea of an experiment and explores what happens when theatre adopts the logic of scientific observation, while simultaneously escaping repeatability and certainty.

Both guest performances affirm the creative strength of contemporary Croatian theatre and its ability to address the complex questions of our time through diverse aesthetics.
