The performance TOXIC is based on the autofictional novel of the same name by playwright and author Eva Mahkovic. It is a “hot mess” of highs and lows, reflections, musings, thoughts, TV, music, art, books, history, saints, icons, Christianity, clichés, romanticized ideas, childhood memories, hopes, disappointments, anger, sadness, friendships, tears, fleeting moments of happiness, joy, emotional and physical pain, shopping, self-reflections, and intrusions of the outside world into a hortus conclusus (enclosed garden). Drawing inspiration from Montaigne's unashamedly introspective laboratory of self-observation, study, and savouring, as well as the vivisectional performances of Marina Abramović, TOXIC delves deeply into the life of an urban young woman grappling with herself, the world, her past, and the demands of the present.
