In The Doctor (2019), Robert Icke reimagines Arthur Schnitzler’s 1912 play Professor Bernhardi, altering its protagonist into a female and deepening its central conflict by setting it in the present. Icke, a contemporary English theatre director and playwright, has built his reputation on bold adaptations of classic works, and The Doctor is his most renowned. However, it has not entirely supplanted Schnitzler’s Professor Bernhardi; in recent years, both the original and Icke’s reworking have been staged in many European repertory theatres. This is no coincidence—both plays grapple with medical ethics and the tensions between professional duty and shifting social paradigms.
