In The Doctor (2019), the multi-award-winning British playwright and theatre director Robert Icke counterposes medical ethics to religious and other philosophical beliefs, populism and the poison of public opinion. What is revealed are complex connections and questions of medical ethics, economic pressures, identity politics and toxic public discourses. Icke based The Doctor on Artur Schnitzler’s 1912 comedy Professor Bernhardi, but he made his protagonist a woman and deepened the play’s problem by moving it to the present day. Along with Schnitzler’s criticism of Viennese anti-Semitism, Icke introduced a series of new motifs into The Doctor and focused on questions of identity in a broader, philosophical sense. What emerged was an exciting political and socially critical play.
