Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a minute, psychological cut through an evening in a seemingly perfect American family. It provides the spectator with an almost voyeuristic insight into the disintegration of a carefully constructed social image. The American dream, the immense wealth, fertile cotton fields and a pile of children running around the house turn out to be an illusion that, in the play, increases to almost the level of a classical tragedy.

The celebration of Big Daddy’s 65th birthday, where all three generations of the Pollitt family gather, reveals the relationships rotten to the core. Faced with Big Daddy’s illness, all the greed, jealousy and secrecy come to the surface, and the mendacity of the world that these characters inhabit is revealed. The false images thus go beyond the concrete situation and open into a broader, universal human experience.
